Florence Fong is a microbiologist at Clancy Environmental Consultants, Inc. She has 5 years of experience conducting laboratory and field research in aquatic and environmental microbiology. Prior to joining CEC, Ms. Fong was a graduate student in Dr. Charles Gerba's laboratory at the University of Arizona and conducted and supported a wide variety of environmental monitoring, water quality testing, and environmental product testing projects. She has experience in cell culture, including the propagation of bacteria, bacteriophage, and viruses; electron microscopy; DNA extraction and analysis; has performed vacuum filtration of water samples; and has tested environmental samples for the presence of enteric viruses. She also supported a literature review and subsequent protocol development for a BSL-2 surrogate for Lassa virus, as well as for the concentration and purification of enveloped viruses (e.g., influenza A, human coronavirus 229E).

At CEC, Ms. Fong performs cell culture, detection and enumeration of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in water by filtration/IMS/FA following EPA Method 1623, and supports several EPA-funded projects and state agencies, manufacturers, engineering firms, and municipalities worldwide. She is currently working on an assessment of the efficacy of a novel UV disinfection technology against the anaerobic bacteria Desulfovibrio desulfuricans.
