Dr. Theng Theng Fong is a microbiologist at Clancy Environmental Consultants, Inc. She has over 7 years of experience in environmental microbiology and public health, particularly in microbiological water quality testing. She has been involved in the investigation of the Put-In Bay outbreak in 2005 and epidemiological beach studies in Ohio and Indiana. She has expertise in detection and genetic characterization of waterborne and foodborne pathogens, particularly viruses, through cultivation, cell culture, and especially molecular-based detection approaches, including qPCR, cloning, and other sequenced-based methods. Dr. Fong also has extensive experience in quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA), microbial source tracking, and microbial transport modeling in support of water quality monitoring, assessment, and protection efforts.
As an environmental molecular microbiologist at Michigan State University and previously at the University of Georgia, she analyzed a wide variety of environmental samples for the presence of bacterial, viral, and protozoan indicators of fecal contamination and pathogens. Dr. Fong has developed, conducted, and optimized molecular detection and related assays for several human and animal pathogens, including norovirus, enteroviruses, adenoviruses, polyomaviruses, influenza and Cryptosporidium. For example, she has experience genotyping adenovirus using nested PCR, cloning, and sequencing, and has assayed enteric viruses and Cryptosporidium parvum using cell culture techniques.
